Do your children have trouble brushing the teeth in the backs of their mouths? Are you an adult prone to cavities even though you practice good dental hygiene habits? You can decrease the chances of getting cavities with a simple procedure.
Dental sealants provide a fast, effective way to protect your teeth from decay. Lighthouse Dental uses this preventive measure for children and adults, who can both benefit from sealant application. Sealants are easy to apply and last for several years. You can relax knowing that your teeth or your children’s teeth have an extra layer of defense against tooth decay.
We offer tooth sealant services throughout the Vancouver, Washington and surrounding areas. See how this simple change can make a difference in your dental health.
WHAT ARE DENTAL SEALANTS?
The molars in the back of your mouth have small pits and grooves. Food and bacteria can become trapped in these small spaces even when you brush and floss regularly. The bristles in your brush just can’t reach these areas efficiently, and so teeth often decay in the back of the mouth.
Dental sealants form a type of shield to prevent such decay. Sealants are a very thin layer of resin applied to the surface of the molars, covering the small crevices and protecting them from bacteria. With the tooth covered, the bacteria has nowhere to attack.
Dental sealants are most often used with children, as they protect the teeth while kids learn proper brushing habits. It can take years before younger children can brush properly on their own, and the added protection prevents cavities in the meantime.
But adults can also get sealants, and they can benefit people who have had more than one cavity. If you are prone to plaque collection on your teeth or you worry about frequent cavities, ask our office about adult dental sealants.
HOW ARE SEALANTS APPLIED?
The dental sealant procedure in our Vancouver, Washington, office takes only a few minutes:
- Our dental hygienist cleans your teeth and then dries them using cotton.
- Then we will put cotton around the teeth to keep them dry during the application.
- We apply an acidic solution to the teeth to add roughness and hasten the sealant bond.
- We will rinse and dry the teeth again.
- Then we paint the resin onto each tooth, where it bonds to the enamel.
- Finally, we use a curing light to harden the sealant.
Getting dental sealants doesn’t hurt. You won’t even feel them on your teeth after Dr. Lu has completed the procedure.
WHAT MAINTENANCE IS REQUIRED?
Sealants demand little special attention. You should continue to brush and floss daily and practice good dental hygiene. Avoid eating hard candy or chewing ice, as doing so may crack the sealant.
